The History of Fifty-One State Street
Fifty-One State Street was designed and built in 1853 as a separate freight depot when the Auburn-Rochester Railroad was consolidated with several other small, local railroads into the New York Central. The passenger depot, now the Seneca Falls Village Offices and Police Station, was constructed at the same time.
This building was used as a feed, grain and farm supply business from 1961 until 1983 when Dr. Fred Riegel extensively renovated this historic structure for use as professional offices.
The early railroads were significant to the development of Seneca Falls businesses and the hydro-powered factories along the river and canal, allowing businesses to economically reach new markets to the west and import new goods and materials that helped expand the areas economy. The original freight platforms and roof brackets were refurbished and retained to help preserve the historical integrity of the original structure.
Portions of this restored building are used as offices for attorney, certified public accountants and a mortgage service company.
The building is located in the Historical District of Seneca Falls.
